Dorothy Brownell (DB) Templeton

June 20, 1932 – June 10, 2017

Dorothy Wilson (D.B.) was the second child of Samuel Miller and Esther Brownell.  She was born and raised in Grosse Pointe, Michigan and Hamden, Connecticut.

D.B. graduated from Oberlin College in 1953.  She married fellow Oberlin graduate, Bryce Templeton in 1955 and moved to Cleveland while he completed his M.D. degree at [Case] Western Reserve University.  They then spent four years in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where Bryce completed an internship in medicine and a three-year residency training in general psychiatry.  While living in Chapel Hill, D.B. and Bryce adopted their first child, Karen.

They then moved to Lompoc, California, where Bryce served two years as a commissioned officer with the Public Health Service at the Federal Correctional Institution.  While living in Lompoc, Dorothy delivered their son James B. Templeton.

During their 43 years in Villanova, D.B. completed a Master’s Degree in American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania.  Later she joined the John Milner and Associates of Chadds Ford working for the architectural historian, Ms. Alice Schuyler. Her work included gathering data about the history of structures which might require the movement of public lands, and researching historically recognized homes.  Several years later, D.B. was hired by the Singapore financier and writer R. E. Hale. She was cited by the author in his monograph, The Balestiers: The First American Residents of Singapore [Marshall Cavendish, 2016].  Her work included the location in the Massachusetts Historical Society of the writings of two Revere women correspondents.  She transcribed the hand-written letters between Singapore and Massachusetts which Hale then made extensive use of in his monograph.

D.B. was predeceased by her son James B. Templeton, M.D.  She is remembered with love by her husband, Bryce, her daughter Karen Schnoll and her two granddaughters, Devon Schulz and Ava Schnoll.

A celebration of Dorothy Templeton’s life will be held on August 19, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the Auditorium of Kendal at Longwood in Kennett Square, PA.
