I served under Harry on the RBA. It was a pleasure to get to know him personally at the reunions we attended together. Our condolences to JoAnne and his family.

Harry Crosson was by far the best XO and officer I ever served with and under. If all officers could be like him, there would be no more conflicts and all would be harmonious. Serving under him was my honor and privilege. Will never forget the experience nor him. Rest in peace, Harry. We are with you in spirit now, and we'll be with you in the forever future. Doug Dixon

There are a few people in our lives who make a real difference. In my case Harry was one of those people. I had the privilege of serving under him during my tour on the USS Richard B. Anderson (DD-786). He reported aboard as a replacement for the departing Executive Officer (XO) who was not a particularly popular figure. Harry was like a breath of fresh air in a stuffy room. He was fair and even handed while still demanding the best from the officers and crew. He was well liked and much respected by all. One line of his obit caught my attention: “a sharp mind and those quick one-liners”. The one-liners could inspire laughter, or when necessary, deliver the sting of a gentle reprimand.

I enjoyed very much seeing Harry and meeting you at the San Diego ship’s reunion a few years ago and I regret not making more of an effort to stay in touch.
This poem by Luther Beecher best expresses my feelings:
The Ship
I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her
white sails to the morning breeze, and starts for the blue ocean. She
is an object of beauty and strength, and I stand and watch her until
she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky
come down to mingle with each other. Then someone at
my side says: “There! She’s gone!” Gone where? Gone from my
sight – that is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar
as she was when she left my side, and just as able to bear her load
of living freight to the place of her destination. Her diminished
size is in me, and not in her.
And just at the moment when someone at my side says: “There!
She’s gone!” there are other eyes that are watching for her coming;
and other voices ready to take up the glad shout: “There she
comes!”
And that is death.
Death is only a horizon, and a horizon is the limit of our site.

Joanne, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

It was an honor to serve with the XO aboard the Anderson. A great officer and no nonsense man. I had one major screw up and he explained in detail the error of my ways. As I promised it never happened again. I great respect and so glad to see him at the San Diego reunion
