DONALD R. KOENIG
Kennett Square, PA – Donald R. Koenig, age 91, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 3, 2019 in his room in the Kendal Retirement Community, Kennett Square, PA. He was born September 15, 1927 in Vineland, NJ, to Marion P. and Ralph M. Koenig. He is predeceased by his parents, and his siblings: Ruth Koenig, Elizabeth Lou Bernard, and Ann Wilson.
Don graduated from Vineland High School in 1945, before enlisting in the U.S. Navy (1945-1948). In the Navy he was an Electrician’s Mate aboard the USS Albatross. After his tour in the Navy he attended the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and graduated in 1952 with a degree in Accounting. While at Penn, he was a member of the Acacia Fraternity and a steward in the Acacia dining service. He was also manager of the Light Weight Rowing Crew.
During his professional career he worked as an accountant for the Bicking Paper Mill in Downingtown, PA, J. E. Rhodes in Wilmington, DE, Brandywine Mushroom Company in West Chester, PA, and Mushroom Cooperative Canning Company in Kennett Square, PA.
Don enjoyed canoeing in MI, NH, PA, and the little rivers of NJ. He, also, enjoyed time at the cabin in NH, where he enthusiastically hiked the high peaks of the White Mountains. Following retirement, he actively volunteered at Westtown School for the ‘Work Program’ and was manager of the Westtown Friend’s Meeting Food Co-op.
Don is survived by his wife, his children and their spouses, three grandchildren and their spouses, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Don’s life will be held on Sunday, September 15, 2019 at 2:00 PM in the Kendal Auditorium with a reception to follow.
