Mildred L. Sanderson

Mildred Sanderson Obituary

Mildred “Tommie” Sanderson, age 87, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 12, 2019 at Crosslands Retirement Community in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania with her daughter at her side.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Alfred T. Sanderson in 2003 and her son, Christopher T. Sanderson, in 2012. 

Tommie was the youngest of eight children. Her siblings were: Valerie Lapp, Marvena Stevenson, Frederick Lewis, Earnest “Toby” Lewis, Sybil Holzschuh and Florence “Tiny” Lewis, all departed this life.   She is survived by her sister, Gloria Collins of Wilmington, DE. 

She is survived by her daughter, Victoria S. Rand and husband, James Rand, of Landenberg, PA, as well as her adored grandchildren: James S. Rand (Nicole) of Hillsboro, OR, Elizabeth G. Rand, of Hollywood, CA, Ian B. Rand, of Landenberg, PA.  She is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews. 

Tommie and Al lived and raised their family in Wenonah and Alloway, New Jersey before Tommie moved to Crosslands in 2016.  She was born in Woodbury, New Jersey on January 13, 1932, the daughter of the late Ernest Lewis and Linda Grainger Lewis.  She graduated from Woodbury High School and worked as an executive secretary after graduation. 

She married Al, an attorney, on May 15, 1955.   Tommie was a loving homemaker and mother who passionately supported her husband’s career.  She was an excellent hostess and cook as well as an accomplished artist and horsewoman, winning many accolades in both areas.  Her love of animals was known to all who knew her.  She leaves behind her two much loved dogs. 

A memorial service will be at 11AM on Saturday, September 21, 2019 in the William Penn Room at Crosslands, 1660 East Street Road in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania

A reception with light refreshments will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations be directed to the animal charity or shelter of their choice.
