To Gary and Joe,
Sad news travels fast. Perk was my first supervisor at SPD. He came across as a gruff, no nonsense type of guy but my antics managed to get him to crack a smile now and then. I am quite positive I contributed to his sudden appearance of gray hair! His interaction with me was more of a father and son relationship to which he earned my deepest respect. I, too, learned a lot from him as my career took me down that supervisory path. Now that I am a retiree, I can only hope and pray that I too will reap the benefits of a long retirement and enjoy the life that was meant to be lived. God bless you guys and may your dad rest easy with the Lord.

Gary, Joe, and family,

I worked with your father on the police department for many years. In fact, when he retired as a sergeant in 1982 I was promoted to sergeant to take his place. He was a tough role model to follow and I always respected his opinions on how to treat people and handle situations. He will be missed by all his friends and my prayers are with you and the family at this difficult time.

I had become friends with Perk a few years ago when I moved into the home next to his in Lancaster County. He used to mow my grass but would never take any money, so I started taking him containers of food that I had cooked or baked. He always seemed to enjoy my surprise deliveries and he was definitely not a picky eater, even when I told him that he was a guinea pig for a new recipe I was trying. The containers are always washed and returned with the anticipation that they would be filled back up for him. It's amazing how quickly you can feel close to someone even if you are many years younger. I am definitely going to miss my next door neighbor. I can easily say that I loved this man and although he won't be a physical presence in my life, I believe he is no longer in pain, is at peace and I am so very grateful for the memories we shared.
