Carmen A. Gonzalez, age 89, passed away on October 16, 2025, at Twin Pines Health Care Center in Chatham, Pennsylvania, where she had been a resident since 2014.
Born on April 2, 1936, in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, to Felipe Gonzalez and Maria Quinones, Carmen lived a life defined by faith, kindness, curiosity, and determination. She spent most of her life in Paterson, New Jersey, close to her family in New York and Pennsylvania, before relocating to West Grove, Pennsylvania, in 2012.
Carmen had a deep love for children, those in need, and animals, especially birds, her constant and beloved companions. She never traveled without them.
She had a thirst for knowledge and took pride in challenging herself to speak and write English fluently; her well-worn Webster’s Dictionary filled with underlined and highlighted words stands as a testament to that dedication. She continued her post-secondary education while in her 30s by completing a certification program at the Information Systems Institute in Paterson, New Jersey.
Symbolic of her big heart and vibrant spirit, Carmen’s favorite color was red, and you could always count on her nails being perfectly polished to match.
Carmen will be most remembered for her love of family. She was the relative, especially the aunt, who never forgot a birthday or special occasion. A card was always sent, often with a money order or check, a thoughtful tradition she continued with great-nephews and great-nieces.
Though dementia took her memory in later years, her strength, will, and determination carried her through until she was ready to rest, leaving us peacefully in her sleep. She will be dearly missed.
Carmen is survived by her brothers, Jose (West Grove, PA), Miguel (Yorktown, NY), and Hector (Hatillo, PR); her sister, Lydia (Guayama, PR); and many nieces and nephews, along with their families. She was preceded in death by her parents and a nephew.
No funeral or memorial service is planned.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Twin Pines Health Care Center for their compassionate care over the past 11 years, and to the team at Willow Tree Hospice for the comfort and support they provided to Carmen and her niece during the past two months. We are eternally grateful.
