Charles “Charlie” Joseph Metz passed away on January 10, 2025 in Kennett Square, PA. He was 92 years old. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of Charles Metz, Jr, and Ruth Harnden Metz. His wife of 61 years, Janet Barberie Metz passed away on February 13, 2025. He is survived by his two children, Peter Metz and Suzanne Metz McEllhenney, and son-in-law Peter McEllhenney. He is also survived by two grandchildren: Evan and Colin, and his siblings Julia Metz Barnhart and Robert Metz.
After graduating from Trenton High School, he enrolled in Lehigh University and graduated with a degree in chemical engineering. After serving in the US Army, he obtained a law degree from NYU Law School. He worked as a patent attorney for Union Carbide and Johnson & Johnson.
An avid skier, Charlie was a member of the Montclair Ski Club for many years, and served a term as its president. Charlie and Janet met through the ski club. They married in 1963 and settled in Montclair, NJ. While living in Montclair, Charlie was actively involved in volunteering as a member of the Union Congregational Church in upper Montclair. Among his many interests were Bible study, birding, chess, classical music, computers, the history of Christianity, reading, and walking.
After retiring in 1997, he studied computer programming at the Chubb School. Charlie and Janet moved from Montclair to Kennett Square in 2014.
A memorial service will be on Saturday May 17, 2025 at 11:00AM at the WILLIAM PENN ROOM at CROSSLANDS, 1660 East Street Road, Kennett Square, PA 19348. Light refreshments will be available following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
