Col. Tyree C. Blocker (Ret.) Obituary

Colonel Tyree C. Blocker, Ret., a man of honor, integrity, and service, passed away on March 2, 2024, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by his loved ones and the community he served with distinction.

Born on August 29, 1952, to the late Gus and Marie Blocker (Johnson), Tyree was the youngest of seven children, raised in a household filled with love, values, and a strong sense of community.  He was educated in the Philadelphia Archdiocese, attending Our Lady of the Holy Souls and Roman Catholic High School.  His pursuit of knowledge and excellence led him to his beloved alma mater, The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, where he earned a Bachelors in History and formed lifelong friendships on the football field and beyond. He continued his academic journey at West Chester University, where he earned a Master’s in Criminal Justice, a field he would come to excel in and passionately advocate for throughout his career.  His commitment to education extended beyond his own, as he played a pivotal role in establishing The Colonel Ronald M. Sharpe Scholarship for future criminal justice majors attending West Chester University.

Ty’s greatest joy and source of pride was his family. He shared 49 years of love and devotion with his beloved wife, Janice L. Blocker, and together they raised three children: Kelly Blocker, Dr. Gina Blocker-Adetiba (Cornelius), and G. Adam Blocker. His love and guidance extended to his cherished grandchildren Jacob, Ava, Alexandra (Ali), Caleb, and Amina, who were the lights of his life, bringing him immeasurable happiness and pride.  He shared a very loving and special relationship with his surviving sister Jacqueline Lightfoot (Bernest).  In his leisure time, he could often be found cheering on the Phillies and Eagles, staying informed on current events, and traveling.

During the course of his remarkable life, he found his true calling in law enforcement, answering the call to serve his community by enlisting in the Pennsylvania State Police on March 6, 1975. He steadily rose through the ranks, exemplifying dedication, leadership, and equality at every turn.

Tyree's career with the Pennsylvania State Police was marked by a series of notable achievements and promotions. From his early days as a Trooper assigned to Troop J, Avondale, to his pivotal roles within the Criminal Investigation Unit, and subsequent promotions to Corporal, Sergeant, and Lieutenant, his commitment to justice and public safety was unwavering.

In 1989, his dedication to excellence took him to the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, further enhancing his skills and expertise. His exemplary service continued with promotions to Captain, Major, and appointment as the Director of the Bureau of Drug Law Enforcement.  Following his temporary retirement in 2005, his legacy of service endured as he answered the call to duty once again, serving as the 22nd Commissioner of the PSP at the Governor's request until his final retirement on March 23, 2018.

His passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who knew him including a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will cherish his memory forever. His legacy of integrity, compassion, and selfless service will continue to inspire and guide future generations.
