David Batten Kresge, 89, of Chadds Ford and formerly of Stroudsburg, PA, peacefully passed away on Sunday, September 20, 2020.
Born in Yeadon, Delaware County on May 2, 1931, David was the second child of Dixon Miles Kresge and Sara Batten Kresge. Though his birth was a joyous occasion it was overshadowed by the death of his brother Dixon Miles, just two weeks prior.
He graduated from Haverford High School in 1949, Pennsylvania State University in 1954 with a BA in Political Science (pre-law), University of Pennsylvania in 1957 with an MA in Sociology (emphasis on Criminology) then finally in 1970 he nearly completed his doctorate at New York University.
In 1957 David married the love of his life, Patricia (Hoot) Kresge. Their early married life began in Toms River, NJ area moving to Stroudsburg in 1967 when David began teaching at East Stroudsburg State College. He retired to Chadds Ford in 2002 to be close to his daughters and grandchildren who he was devoted to and to whom he profoundly influenced.
David’s faith in God spurred him to love others well. He was active in his community where he served as a faculty advisor for Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity for 27 years, Pennsylvania Prison Society for 15 years, ACS volunteer for over 10 years and was one of the four original founders of the Black Student Movement on the ESU campus.
He was an enthusiastic conversationalist, a constant student of the culture and avid reader with an extensive book collection, whose insights were greatly valued by others. He enjoyed life long friendships that endured throughout his 89 years and even continued to bless others with the sparkle in his beautiful blue eyes, his sweet smile and infectious laugh. He was a true kind and gracious gentleman until the very end.
He was preceded by his youngest daughter, Wendy Dixon (Kresge) Wick, who passed away in May 2017 and by his beloved wife of 61 years, Patricia in August 2018. Left to carry on his loving legacy are his daughters, Valerie Haven Kresge and Pamela Miles Misciagna; four grandchildren, David Martin Misciagna and Luke Francis Misciagna of Parkesburg, and Skyler Emily Wick and Joshua Settle Wick of Landenberg; sons-in-laws, Martin Francis Misciagna and Jack Borden Wick III.
A viewing will be from 10:00AM until 11:00AM with a funeral service at 11:00AM on Friday, September 25, 2020 at the LONGWOOD FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION of MATTHEW GENEREUX, 913 East Baltimore Pike, Kennett Square.
