Dorothy Scully Connors passed away peacefully in her Kennett Square, Pennsylvania home on April 2, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones.
Born on September 14,1936, in Manhattan, New York, Dorothy was the daughter of Robert Thomas Scully and Dorothy Sanders Scully, founders of the fine home furnishings store, Scully & Scully. Dorothy grew up in Scarsdale, New York and attended Berkeley School. After graduating, Dorothy worked in advertising on Madison Avenue before marrying the love of her life, Thomas Newman Connors, in 1957.
Dorothy and Thomas moved from the New York City area to Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, where they were drawn to the area’s natural beauty and built a rich and fulfilling life together while raising their six children.
Dorothy believed deeply in raising well-rounded, grounded children, and she poured that conviction into every stage of their lives. She encouraged them to explore athletics, music, and visual arts, knowing that each pursuit would help them grow in different and meaningful ways. Just as importantly, she consistently emphasized the values that shaped her own life: faith, integrity, kindness and a strong belief in oneself. These principles became the foundation on which her children built their identities, a lasting testament to the love and intention with which she guided them.
Dorothy was an active member in the Chester County community. She started each day with a rigorous workout at the Kennett YMCA, where she always found time to mingle with friends. She worked part-time at Kendal Retirement Community for 22 years, where she shared her warmth and uplifting presence with all the residents.
An accomplished bridge player, Dorothy enjoyed regular games with a close circle of friends. Dorothy appreciated beautiful homes and was an enthusiastic gardener and decorator. As a volunteer for the Chester County Hospital and Kennett Library, Dorothy guided tours of local historic homes for fundraising events. She also enjoyed frequent visits to Longwood Gardens and Winterthur.
Dorothy and Thomas shared nearly 46 wonderful years of marriage before his passing in 2003. Together, they traveled the world, creating treasured memories. Dorothy especially loved summers in Southampton, New York surrounded by family and friends.
Though petite in stature, she was truly larger than life, a strong and loving matriarch. Outgoing and engaging, she connected easily with others and was both candid and wise when offering advice. Dorothy will be fondly remembered for her smile, quick wit, and sense of humor.
Dorothy was predeceased by her beloved husband, Thomas, whom she deeply missed, as well as her brothers, Robert Scully, and her twin, Dennis Scully.
Dorothy is survived by her children: Thomas (Lauren), Kevin (Jane), Sean (Carolyn), Brian (Jon), Patricia du Rivage (Mark), and Noreen Haubert (William). She was a proud and devoted grandmother to sixteen grandchildren: Daniel, Kelley, Christopher, Luke, Ryan, Connor, Catherine, Wesley, Graham, Patrick, Chad, Brendan, Sebastian, Sullivan, Duncan, and Oliver-Beau.
She is also survived by her brothers, Michael Scully and Brian Scully; her in-laws, Nancy Scully, Helen Bates, Chris (Arlene) Connors, Carol Connors, and Barbara Connors, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
