Gordon Jones Obituary

Gordon L. Jones of West Grove, Pennsylvania, formerly of Newark, Delaware, passed away at his home in the arms of his family, as he wished on Monday, February 3, 2020.  He was 62 years old.

He was sadly diagnosed with cancer (cholangiocarcinoma) in November of last year. We rolled up our sleeves in preparation but could never quite catch enough breath to get into the fight.

Born in Monchengladbach, Germany, Gordon was the son of Jack Jones (deceased) and Rose Lengning Jones. Gordon was the beloved husband of Sally A. Jones (nee Cooper) for 37 years; devoted father of Dale Jones (Kristen) and Brad Jones. In addition, he leaves behind his brother Clive (Sandra) and his sister Carol (David); nieces; Gemma and Victoria (Kevin), and nephews Craig (Natalie) and Alex, grandnephew Liam and grandniece Violet along with much loved aunts and cousins in Germany and his countless friends.

Gordon was larger than life, both physically and figuratively, and never missed an opportunity to live it to the fullest. He loved a get together: take-out games night, the International Dinner group, poker, Nuts in May, beer, wine and whiskey tasting, as well as our annual New York 6.  He spoke to everyone he met and found a common bond with them whenever he could.  He never ceased to amaze me, before the end of any cab journey he knew our drivers name, country of birth, what brought them to this country, if they were happy, their traditional food and what sport and team they followed!

Gordon seriously liked sports! Over the years he chased around balls of all shapes and sizes playing rugby, rugby netball, soccer (football), cricket, basketball and golf, representing Notts & Derby boys clubs, Hull University, Calverton & Caterham cricket clubs, Warlingham RFC, and Surrey rugby and captained Combined London Insurance Group in England.  The Toronto Lions RFC and Ontario rugby in Canada, Wilmington RFC, Philadelphia White Marsh and Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union (EPRU) select team. He played New Castle County soccer, where his greatest joy was playing on the same winning team as his son Dale for many years. Also, he played Dupont pick-up basketball, softball with the Dupont BASAP team and golf with his many crazy friends, and so much more.  In addition to playing, he also coached soccer at the Western YMCA and the “Steel” at Hockessin Soccer Club in Delaware.

Gordon was very proud of his many work accomplishments and multiple patents, working at a list of blue chip firms; Commercial Union, Ontario Ministry of Revenue, TD Bank and GM Canada, Reliance Consulting Group, Dupont, Conrail, and First USA through to JP Morgan Chase. He found teaching in the JPMC TAP program especially rewarding.

However, Gordon was most of all proud of his family and their fine character, strong morals and decency and their drive to do the right thing. He will be sorely missed.
