Janet Barberie Metz

Janet Barberie Metz, age 93, passed away on February 13, 2025 in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Born in Caldwell, New Jersey, she was the daughter of John Barberie and Gertrude Muriel Barberie. She is survived by two children, Peter Metz and Suzanne McEllhenney, and son-in-law Peter McEllhenney. Also surviving are her two grandchildren: Evan and Colin McEllhenney. Her husband, Charles Metz, predeceased her in January of this year.

After graduating high school, Janet studied piano performance.  She obtained her bachelor’s degree at the Mannes School of Music, and her masters from the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. After meeting Charles in the Montclair Ski Club, they married in 1963, and then settled in Montclair, New Jersey.  Janet taught piano in schools prior to her marriage to Charles and then did so from home for decades afterwards. In addition to teaching the piano, Janet enjoyed singing in the choir of their church, Union Congregational. She also performed in the Montclair Oratorio Society. Charles and Janet moved from Montclair to Kennett Square, Pennsylvania in 2014.

A memorial service will be on Saturday May 17, 2025 at 11:00AM at the WILLIAM PENN ROOM at CROSSLANDS, 1660 East Street Road, Kennett Square, PA 19348.  Light refreshments will be available following the service. 

In lieu of flowers the family kindly requests that donations be sent to Chester County Hospital or to The Juilliard School of Music.
