Joan S. Thornton, age 88, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born to Gaetano and Beulah Stouffer, Joan was the youngest of twelve children in a large, close-knit family. She grew up in Philadelphia and carried the values of hard work, faith, and family throughout her life.
Joan graduated from Lansdowne High School, where she was proudly selected as “May Queen”. Early in her career, she worked as a switchboard operator for Bell Telephone Company and later became a florist. In 1956, she married the love of her life, Edward D. Thornton Sr., beginning a partnership that would last for over 50 years.
As a devoted wife and mother, Joan took great pride in raising her three children. She was the ultimate homemaker, creating a warm, loving, and organized environment for her family. Joan was known for her meticulous nature, taking great care in her appearance, and always ensuring her home was inviting and beautiful.
Joan had a strong faith, which she lived out through daily practices like reading the Bible each morning and attending church regularly. She was also a dedicated volunteer for many years, contributing her time to Meals on Wheels and a local hospital, always seeking to give back to her community.
Joan had a love for dancing and was an enthusiastic fan of 50s music, which brought her great joy and allowed her to relive the music and moments of her youth. But her greatest joy in life was her extended family, who kept her young at heart and always on the go. Her love for her family was unwavering, and she treasured every moment spent with them.
In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ed; a granddaughter; six brothers and five sisters. She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Heavens (James) of Wilmington, DE, and Doreene Bernard (Peter) of Boothwyn, PA, and her son, Edward Thornton (Lorraine) of Pedricktown, NJ. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom will miss her dearly.
Joan’s family has honored her wish for no formal services.
Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
Rest in peace, Joan. You will be forever missed and remembered with love.
