John Aloysious Munce, III of Boalsburg, PA passed away peacefully following a short battle with glioblastoma on January 5, 2022 at the age of 68. John was the son of John “Duke Snow” Jr. & Phyllis Munce and Joanne & Elmer Demofonte. He attended Garnet Valley High School in Concordville, PA until he enlisted in the Navy in December 1970. After basic training, John served onboard USS Leonard F. Mason (DD-852), where he was a personnelman who compiled service record data. During his service, John received the National Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Ribbon (3 stars), Meritorious Unit Commendation and Combat Action Ribbon. While stationed at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in 1976, John was involved in a motorcycle accident. The traumatic brain injury (TBI) that he suffered in the accident would affect him for the rest of his life.
John was artistic, funny, charming and creative; he enjoyed long walks, playing pool, listening to music, baseball and studying scripture.
John is survived by his daughter Elisabeth; beloved “Mother” Phyllis; siblings, Michael Munce, Bonnie “Bonita” (Michael) Cartieri, Diane “Kelly” (Paul) Fitzgerald, Steven (Connie) Demofonte and Linda Bianchi; a grandson; seven nieces and nephews and many caring neighbors and friends. He was preceded in death by his loving father John Jr., mother Joanne, step-father Elmer and brother David Demofonte.
The family would like to thank the skilled and compassionate caregivers at the Coatesville VA Medical Center, Coatesville, PA and the H. John Heinz III VA Medical Center, Pittsburgh, PA for making John’s end of life journey comfortable and peaceful.
Burial with United States Navy honors will be at 1:00PM on Friday, April 8, 2022 at Finns Point National Cemetery, 454 Fort Mott Rd, Pennsville, NJ 08070.
