Joseph Wylie Johnson of Kennett Square passed away at his home on Sunday afternoon, March 25, 2012.  He was 84 years old.  Born and raised in Longwood, he was the son of the late John M. Johnson and the late Blanche Johnson (nee. Ironsides).

Joe retired in 1990 from Longwood Gardens after 43 years of service as a gardener.  A Life Member of the Longwood Fire Company since 1947, Joe served as their President and Chief. 

He was the beloved husband for 60 years of Elsie Petroll Johnson; father of Jay Johnson and his wife Janet and John Johnson and his wife Terry; grandfather of Christopher and Daniel Johnson; brother of Dorothy Brown.

A graveside service with US Army and Longwood Fire Company honors will be offered at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 29, 2012 at the Longwood Cemetery, 945 East Baltimore Pike in Kennett Square.  A visitation will be held on Wednesday evening from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the LONGWOOD FUNERAL HOME of MATTHEW GENEREUX, 913 East Baltimore Pike in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania 19348.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the Longwood Fire Company, 1001 East Baltimore Pike Kennett Square, Pennsylvania  19348.
