Leroy Franklin Houck, III of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania passed away suddenly at his home on Thursday, August 6, 2020. He was 73 years old.
He was the son of the late Leroy F. Houck, Jr. and the late Jean Anne Miller Houck. He was raised in New London, attended New London Academy, Kemblesville Elementary and graduated from Avon Grove High School in 1964. Following high school, Roy was drafted into the U.S. Army and among the many sent to war in Vietnam. From a private to a Master Gunnery Sergeant, he served our country and was honorably discharged. Upon his return, Roy worked in construction with his Dad until accepting a position in the Agriculture Department at the DuPont Company where he worked as an Associate Biologist. He retired after 44 years of faithful service.
As a young adult, he played as a drummer in a band, enjoyed ice skating, hunting arrowheads, throwing horseshoes, fishing, bowling, playing softball, collecting coins and woodworking. Later in life, he restored every aspect of his home, including birdfeeders for the birds and squirrels. Roy served as an auxiliary Police officer in Kennett Square in the 1970s, where he was awarded, “Auxiliary Officer of the Year” in 1976. He enjoyed coffee with his friends at WaWa and being “uptown” chatting with residents.
Most of all, Roy loved his family.
He was the beloved husband of Rita Hunley Houck of 50 years; father of Heather Houck Pannell and Heidi Houck; grandfather of Nicholas Allen Pannell (Jenny and her children, Mackenzie and Madison), Vincent Ryan Pannell and Gabriel Thomas Franklin Pannell; great-grandfather of Royan Lee Pannell, Dane Allen Pannell and new arrival, Ava Rose Pannell; brother of Marvin M. Houck (wife-Kay). Also survived by his brother in law, Elmer Roy Hunley.
A graveside service with United States Army military honors will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 5, 2020 at UNION HILL CEMETERY, 424 N. Union Street, Kennett Square.
There will be no viewing or funeral home service.
