Louis J. D’Iorio (Lou) passed away on Sunday, June 29th 2025. Just as he’d wished, he left us peacefully, at his home in Chadds Ford, with his boots on. He was 89 years old.
Born and raised in Chester, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, Lou was the son of Alfred and Mary Bell D’Iorio.
After High School, Lou served in the Pennsylvania National Guard from 1954-1957, then served in the United States Army from 1958-1959. In 1962 Lou moved with his wife, Kathy, to his current Chadds Ford residence, where he pursued his dream of working with horses, dogs, and raising his family. He instructed, boarded, and bred horses and was the proud owner of Leo Wade, a 1967 PA State Reserve Champion Yearling Stallion, 1968 Two-Year-Old Champion Stallion, and 1968 American Quarter Horse Association Halter Champion. Lou was a detective with Delaware County Criminal Investigation Division, reporting to the District Attorney’s Office. During his time, he worked jointly with Federal agencies to curtail motorcycle gang activities in Delaware and Chester counties and investigated municipal corruption. Later in life he continued to follow his passion of working with animals by opening a pet food business, Animals’ Appetites and Accessories, which he owned for 22 years. Lou loved to travel the continental US—especially the West—and toured most of the US states with his family via a camper in the bed of the 1965 Chevy pick-up. Destinations included Carlsbad Caverns, Grand Teton, Yellow Stone, Disney World, White Sands (NM), St Louis Arch, The Four Corners/Pueblo Cliff Dwellings, and the Grand Canyon. He was active with Boy Scouts, youth club sports, and very involved with the Unionville Quarterback Club for over 10 years, helping raise thousands of dollars to support the program. After retirement, Lou enjoyed taking care of the farm, raising Dobermans, and spending time with family, neighbors, and long-time friends.
He was the husband of the late Kathy D’Iorio, who died in 1979; proud father of LJ D’Iorio and his wife, Petra Tang and their children, Elle and Kira D’Iorio and Petra’s children, Lara and Oscar Bloom; Klay D’Iorio and his children, Karina and Sophie D’Iorio; Klint D’Iorio and his wife, Lyn and their children, Trevor and Kara D’Iorio; and Lyle D’Iorio.
Visitation with the family will be from 11:00AM to 12:00PM with a memorial service at 12:00PM on Thursday, July 31, 2025 at the LONGWOOD FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION of MATTHEW GENEREUX, 913 East Baltimore Pike, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Burial will be private
