Mary Nice Obituary

Mary Chiodo Nice of Kennett Square passed away peacefully on February 4th, 2021. She was 90 years old.  Born January 17th, 1931, in Bradford, Pennsylvania, Mary was the 3rd child of Santo Chiodo and Concetta Cardamone Chiodo...who married in Italy and immigrated to the United States.  Although she arrived on her first day of school knowing very little English, her close knit neighborhood, the love and protection of her three brothers, and her feisty personality allowed her to assimilate quickly.  Mary attended the University of Buffalo where she received her nursing degree.  Several years later, she met her husband, Duane (Mike), through mutual friends and was married in 1961. Although she happily retired from nursing to raise her family, she was often called upon to utilize her nurturing skills whenever one of her children required first aid. She and Mike celebrated 55 years of marriage before he passed in 2016.

A loving daughter, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Mary was a remarkable cook and enjoyed preparing meals for loved ones over the holidays and for birthday celebrations. Her life’s joy was spending time with her family and making every occasion special.  Mary’s many friends were drawn to her welcoming smile, caring demeanor and witty sense of humor. She was rooted in faith and was an active member of her local parish; serving on the Ladies of Saint Pat's and the Altar and Rosary Society.   She also enjoyed playing bridge, entertaining friends, tending to her flower gardens, and spending time with her sisters-in law (Dorie, Marilyn, Marilyn and Nancy).

She was the wife of the late Duane (Mike) Nice; mother of Susan Kuon (Donny), the late John Nice (Dina), Bill Nice and Rick Nice (Joanna); grandmother of Kyle and Megan Kuon; Maddie and Katie Nice; Tyler and Anna Nice; Caleb, Cooper and Declan Nice; sister of Samuel Chiodo, the late Emilio Chiodo and the late Michael Chiodo.

The family would like to say a special thank you to all of the staff at Brandywine Living at Longwood for the wonderful care they provided Mary over the past several years.

Due to Covid-19, the Funeral Mass and burial will be private.  However, Mary’s service can be live streamed at 11:00am, Thursday, February 11th using the following link:
