Nancy Gordon Ligo (Mimi), a resident of Kendal at Longwood, was born on June 2, 1931 to the late George and Louise Harford Milliken Gordon in Donora, Pennsylvania. She passed peacefully at the age of 92 at the Chester Country Hospital on July 8, 2023.
She was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Robert Norman Ligo for 67 years. Bob passed away in September, 2020. She is survived by her daughter, Janet Ligo Robertson and her husband, John C. Robertson of Glen Mills, Pennsylvania, her son, Bruce Gordon Ligo and his wife, Nancy May Ligo of Cypress, Texas. She is also survived by five grandchildren; Caitlin A. Ligo, Lauren Anne (Robertson) Levin, Bryce R. Ligo, Matthew C. Robertson and Grant G. Ligo; great-granddaughter, Charlotte C. Levin and great-grandson, Fergus W. Ligo.
Nancy always greeted you with a warm and sunny smile. She was exceptionally kind, light hearted and approachable. She cared greatly for her family and friends. She loved to share her life with others, whether it was playing tennis, golf, traveling or partnering in bridge
(playing 3 times/ week). She loved her kids, grandkids and great grandkids and shared photos and stories of them often.
Nancy kept up with current events and even sports, especially the Phillies. You could always find her with a book in hand to relax or watching the PBS Newshour to keep up with the news. Masterpiece Theatre was her favorite on Sunday nights.
Nancy brought a positive and upbeat attitude into each day. She was compassionate, patient and kind with everyone she encountered. It’s no wonder that she became a nurse, graduating from Allegheny Woman’s Hospital (now part of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) and working for many years helping others as a head nurse at the hospital. She also worked as a nurse at a pediatric allergist practice in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Travel was central to Nancy’s life after leaving Pittsburgh, including when the military brought Bob, Nancy, Janet and Bruce to Japan (3 years), various cities in the U.S. and Germany (4 years). They then settled down in Cincinnati, Ohio and later Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Nancy kept up with her friends, sending at least 100 Christmas cards each year.
Nancy lived a long and happy life in the Chadds Ford area, including spending over thirty years at Greenville Country Club where she made so many close friends. Nancy and Bob also spent thirty-five years vacationing at Seabrook Island, South Carolina with their closest Greenville friends. In the last 10 years, she and Bob also made many good friends at Kendal at Longwood.
She’s finally back at Bob’s side. The last few years have been tough without him and we know she’s hugging him and has a beaming smile. Thank you, Nancy, for all your love and kindness. Rest in peace knowing your family and friends are doing well because of you and please know how much we all miss you.
A Celebration of Nancy’s life will be planned for later this year.
