Raymond Popko Obituary

Raymond Popko passed away Wednesday, October 13, 2021.  He was 88 years old.

Born in Manhattan, New York, he was the son of Thomas Popko and Pauline Hatenko Popko.

He was the beloved husband of the late Helga Koehler Popko; father of Eva Dreyer (Jeffrey) and the late Maria Popko; brother of Eve Thomson; uncle of Larissa Thomson; great uncle of Van Carlson.

Raymond was raised in New York City and graduated from Seward Park High School in 1950.  After working for two years, he enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1952 and honorably served until 1956.  Following his discharge, Raymond earned his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute in 1960.  Raymond was proud of his working career that began with General Electric and an oversees assignment in Germany, where he met Helga Koehler.  He later joined Western Union and moved back to New York City settling and raising their family on Staten Island.  He retired from the Metro Transit Authority in 2006.  In retirement, Raymond enjoyed gardening, reading and taking walks with Helga.  Helga passed away in 2009 after 45 years of marriage.  Holidays and spending time with the family was of the utmost importance to Raymond.
