Obituary

Robert G. Nutt of Absecon, South Jersey, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 23, 2026 at Naaman’s Creek Country Manor.  He was 88 years old.  Born, raised, and educated in Pennsauken, Camden County, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Harold Nutt and the late Bertha Schulz Nutt.

Robert was a proud graduate of Merchantville High School, class of 1955. He maintained meaningful, life-long relationships with many friends he had made in middle and high school, and these friendships were his lifeblood until the end.

He served on active duty in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1958.  Through the U.S. Navy, he was able to see the world. This led to his interest in literature and history.

Following his honorable discharge, Robert began his studies at Rowan University where he studied history and graduated in 1961 to become a middle school English teacher. He would often tell stories of the students he taught and how rewarding it was to serve as their mentor, and he constantly corrected his children’s grammar. Per his usual, he made many life-long friends in college as well and had many colorful stories to share from those days.

Robert resided in Merchantville and was an English teacher for the Collingswood Board of Education for 28 years before retiring in 1992.  He served on the Merchantville Board of Education for 6 years, their President for 5 years and was a Little League coach for many years.

He was the beloved father of Timothy (Jennifer), Nancy Chase (Douglas) and Scott, and loving grandfather of Lauren, Megan, Jillian, and Alexander. Although divorced, he remained close with Judith (Nutt) Castagna, her husband Joe Castagna, and loved each member of her extended family, as well. Bob often referred to his late father-in-law Joe Barabino as one of his best friends.

Robert was predeceased by his eldest brother William (surviving spouse Nancy), and survived by his other siblings Janet Gibbins (William, deceased), James (Phyllis), Donald (Marilyn, recently deceased).

Bob never met a stranger, and he loved to kid around and share jokes. There was much laughter throughout his lifetime, and boy, he could tell a story.

All who knew him understood that he was an avid sports fan and that, since boyhood, he remained dedicated to his team, the St. Louis Cardinals, of which he was for sure their #1 fan.

His absence will be felt profoundly in many circles.

A celebration of life will be planned for him in the coming months as a chance to gather all those whose lives he touched.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Robert’s name may be made to the following charity which he supported: St. Jude CLICK HERE
