Sydney Fleming Obituary

Sydney “Syd” Winn Fleming of Kendal at Longwood passed away on March 1, 2024 at 99 years of age. He was the son of Sydney Winn Fleming and Mary Evans Fleming. 

Syd was born and raised in Thomasville, Georgia. After completing high school, Syd attended Emory University in Atlanta. His college career was interrupted by WWII. Following his junior year, Syd was drafted into the Army as a Private. He served in Europe for 2 years, during which time he was promoted to Sergeant. Upon returning to the US in 1947, Syd returned to Emory to complete his studies. He graduated in 1948 with a BA and MS in Chemistry. During this second interval at Emory, Syd met Jean Constance Thompson. They married in June of 1949.

Syd obtained his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1954. In 1953 Syd began his employment with the DuPont Company. His entire, 41-year career was spent at the Experimental Station in Wilmington, Delaware.  At the time of his retirement in 1994, Syd was serving as a Senior Research Fellow.

Syd became a widower in 1999 when Jean passed away. In 2012, Syd married Helen C. Meredith. They moved from their respective homes in Wilmington to Kendal at Longwood in Pennsylvania. They were active in many facets of the music scene in the Philadelphia-Wilmington area. They regularly attended performances of the Philadelphia Ballet, the Philadelphia Symphony, the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, and the Kennett Symphony.

Syd’s activities over the years included membership in professional organizations in which he held leadership roles, attendance and leadership roles at Grace United Methodist Church in Wilmington, and hobbies such as sailing, snow skiing, and scuba diving.

He was the beloved husband of Helen C. Meredith, and formerly the late Jean Thompson Fleming; father of Linda Fleming Bondy (Pete), the late Thomas Winn Fleming (Grace Harper), Robert Barnwell Fleming (Judy), Nancy Fleming Grigg (Donald); grandfather of Erica Bondy Blumenthal, Ryan Bondy, Colin Bondy, Noelle Bondy McNab, Rachael Bondy, Christopher Fleming Harper, Nolan Fleming Harper, Melissa Fleming, Kayla Fleming, Aaron Fleming, Joshua Fleming, Thomas Grigg, Lindsay Grigg and Connor Grigg; brother of the late James Evans Fleming. 

A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM on Sunday, March 10, 2024 at the Auditorium at Kendal at Longwood, 1109 East Baltimore Pike, Kennett Square, PA.
