Obituary

Terry W. Oncay, age 86, of Millsboro, DE passed away Oct 26, 2024, at home with his loving family by his side.  Born in Philadelphia, PA on October 18, 1938, Terry was the son of the late Louis and Elizabeth Fisher Oncay.

Terry graduated from Upper Darby High School 1956.  He worked at Wyeth Laboratories in Philadelphia, where he met his loving wife of 61 years, Joanne Drain Oncay.  He proudly served in the US Marines.  He was a Chester Township police officer before he would spend 20 + years at Getty refinery in Delaware City before retiring and moving to Millsboro.  Once retired, he worked as a ranger at Baywood Golf Club where he enjoyed his game of golf.  He was a member of Indian Mission Church and former member of St. Mary Mother of the Peace Catholic Church in Millsboro and Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in New Castle.   He volunteered at Meals on Wheels for over 20 years.  He was a loving father and his family meant the world to him.  He was an avid sports fan and coached his son’s football team and umped his daughter’s softball team while rooting on his Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles.  He enjoyed skiing, golfing, and yearly vacations with family at the Wildwood shore.  He could be found on Wednesdays at the Legion playing shuffleboard or on a Friday night with his companion Sue dancing away.  He always welcomed anyone to join him for his Crown Apple on the rocks. He also enjoyed traveling and was lucky enough to take a pilgrimage to the Holy Land with his wife, Joanne, brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Eleanor Drain and his daughter. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joanne and a brother.  

He is survived by his children Robert C. Oncay (Karen) of Newark, Terrence W. Oncay of Wilmington, RoseAnn Oncay-Steinbeiser (Eric) of Newark and Nadine B. Shavack of Lewes; grandchildren, Drew Oncay (Ashley), Jessica  Arnott (Rance), Brett Shavack, Brittany Quynn (Andrew), Jordan Oncay (Amanda), Brooke Steinbeiser, Alyssa Shavack, Ericca Shavack and Eric J. Steinbeiser, Jr.(Savannah); great grandfather of Ashlynn, Paul, Brett, Sam, Avery, Beckham, Max, Blake, Violet, Ellis, Delaney, Layla, Makai, Raelynn and Keturah.  Also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, in-laws and close friends.

The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to his companion, Sue, who made him happy and took great care of him.  In addition to his hospice nurse, Melissa (AccentCare) for her compassionate care.

Funeral services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Terry’s name may be made to Meals on Wheels (Sussex County, DE), Nanticoke Indian Association (Millsboro, DE) or Indian Mission Church (Lewes, DE).
