Dr. Walther Gustav Friedrich Grot

1929 - 2026


Dr. Walther G.F. Grot, age 96, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026.

A visionary chemist for DuPont, Walther immigrated to the U.S. in 1956, eventually settling in Chadds Ford, PA. He is best known for developing the revolutionary fluoropolymer membrane that transformed the global production of chlorine and caustic soda.

A lifelong learner whose passion for science began with a childhood chemistry kit, Walther remained active in the field until his final days. Beyond his professional legacy, he was a devoted husband and father who loved windsurfing and swimming in the Turks and Caicos well into his nineties.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Carla, with whom he shared 70 beautiful years; three children, Christina and husband Michael Wertheimer, StephenÊ and wife Wendy, and Annette Grot andÊhusband Geoffrey Burr; six grandchildren Marissa, Daniel, Emily, Allison, Winifred and Wilhelm; and three great-grandchildren - Madison, Leon and Julia.

He will be remembered for his intellect, curiosity, and enduring dedication to both his family and the science he loved.
