Louis Sloan

Louis Sloan, age 86, of Rehoboth Beach, DE & Longboat Key, FL, passed away Aug 27, 2016.  He is survived by his wife Peggy, with whom he shared 25 yrs of marriage; daughters, Donna Sloan Burick of Greensboro, NC and Robin Sloan Densten of Newark, DE; stepson J. Mark Eldredge (Melisa) of Middletown, DE. and 5 grandchildren, David and Jordan Sloan Burick, Mallory and Matthew Eldredge and Hannah Sloan Densten.  Lou was predeceased by his parents, Harry & Anna Sloan; four siblings, Sam, Martin, Aaron & Rose and two sons, Stuart and Steven.

Lou graduated from Wilmington High School.  He started working at age 12, after school, and at age 17 he began working as a photographer in Rehoboth Beach, DE.  Shortly thereafter the 4 Sloan brothers formed a business partnership that lasted their entire business lives.  Their original food operation, The Dog House Sandwich Shop, opened in 1953 on DuPont Highway in Wilmington Manor, New Castle, DE and is still operational today.  Subsequent businesses included the Charcoal Pit on Concord Pike, which Lou operated for 35 years as well as a Dunkin Donuts, Pappy’s, Beefy’s and Swanky Frank.  The Dog House and the Charcoal Pit represent 2 of 8 restaurants currently listed on the Delaware Culinary Trail in New Castle County.  In addition to the restaurants, Lou joined an associate to form Redco, a restaurant equipment manufacturing company that developed, manufactured and held a couple of patents on vegetable slicing equipment that are still used across in the industry across the country today.  Lou was 1 of 7 charter members of the Delaware Restaurant Association and was very active in the early years.  He served on the Governor’s Committee to represent local businesses in the improvement plans for Concord Pike in the early 1970s.

He was a past member of Temple Beth Emeth, Brandywine Country Club and Kings Creek Country Club in Rehoboth Beach.  He loved skiing, golf and was an avid tennis player.  When not on the tennis courts, Lou & Peggy traveled extensively, visiting every continent, with the exception of Antarctica.

A "Celebration of Life" will be from 11:00AM until 1:00PM on Sunday, September 4, 2016 at MARIS GROVE CARDINAL CLUBHOUSE, 200 Maris Grove Way, Glen Mills, PA  19342.
