The Family of Renée C. Wagner sadly announce their mother’s passing on March 7th, 2020. Renée, was born June 15th, 1926, the daughter of the late Adolphe and Hildegard Roth. She graduated with Honors from Haverford High School and the University of Pennsylvania, where she was active in the drama, music, and language programs.
Renée married Leonard C. Wagner in 1950. They celebrated nearly 50 years of marriage living most of those years in West Chester. Renée was always active in the community. During her early years in West Chester, she was a member of the Meriwether Farms Garden Club and won numerous awards for her flowers and her arrangements. During this time, she was also active in many card clubs, and to her last days enjoyed playing bridge in the groups that started together in the 1950s. Renée was also busy raising 4 children; Kristin, Karin, Eric and Kurt. She was always a part of their lives and helped them as they pursued their interests in all activities.
As her children grew, so did Renée’s career path. She went to West Chester University and received another degree in Education and became a French teacher in the West Chester Area School District. She was the head of the French Club and took her students on many trips to France and Canada to expand their knowledge of the language and the French culture. Before her retirement in the late 1980’s, Renée was recognized for excellent teaching by receiving the Outstanding French Teacher Award.
Renée retired from education but found new outlets for her energy as a doting grandmother, DeeDee, and as an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church. Through Calvary, Renée shared her love and compassion for others by delivering Meals on Wheels for over 25 years. In her mid-80’s, she even did a 5K Walk to help raise money for a Church cause. Whether it was a person or an animal in need, Renée was there with a helping hand.
Renée was an avid learner, she read books by the hundreds. Renée loved to do crossword puzzles. You would often find her head to head with her grandson, Todd, trying to figure out the right word. She loved to travel and have new experiences. Renée frequently visited her families in Norway and France, and wherever her family and friends lived in the United States, she was a welcome visitor. Above all else she loved her family, and nothing would make her happier than to brag about the achievements of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and their various pets. She will be sorely missed by family and friends.
She was the beloved wife of the late Leonard C. Wagner; mother of Kristin Wagner Webb (Thomas, Jr.), Karin Alice Long (Randall), Kurt L. Wagner (Joleen) and the late Eric Wagner; grandmother of Spencer Szewczyk, Todd Szewczyk, Kyle Szewczyk, Erin (Long) Robbins, Benjamin MacGeorge, Stephanie (MacGeorge) Godfrey and the late Nicholas MacGeorge; sister of Roy H.
